The WPT Alpha8 super high roller poker tournament series debuted at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, FL last year, and is scheduled to make a triumphant return to the Florida casino in January. Part of the Season II line-up, the poker tournament is a super high roller, slated for January 17-18 and featuring a massive, $100,000 buy-in.
Last year’s televised WPT Alpha8 at the Florida Casino drew 21 entries, 18 of which were from unique players (+3 re-buys). Only the top four competitors received a slice of the lucrative pie, with American poker pro Steven Silverman taking top honors, along with $891,660 for his efforts. A trio of fellow US pros shared in the remaining prize pool, including 2x WSOP bracelet winner and 2x WPT titlist JC Tran (2nd, $526,890), Jeff Gross (3rd, $364,770) and Matt Glantz (4th, $243,180).
The Florida casino is expecting a slightly larger turnout this year as the WPT Alpha8 enters its second season. The first event of the poker tournament series played out in October at London’s Palm Beach Casino Mayfair, garnering 23 entries; 4 more than last year’s UK rendition. American Dan Colman, winner of this year’s WSOP Big One for One Drop, went on to win that super high roller, adding another £600,000 to his $22.7mm career total.
“WPT Alpha8 Florida is another significant poker event that supports our continued efforts of bringing the best in poker play anywhere in the U.S., here, to Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino,” extolled Larry Frank, General Manager of Poker Operations for Seminole Gaming. “We are excited to have Seminole Hard Rock as a part of the WPT Alpha8 tour for 2015, and for the opportunity to showcase our new resort amenities opening this winter.”
Adam Pliska, President of the World Poker Tour, shared his thoughts on the organization’s triumphant return to the Florida casino. “Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is the historic site of our first-ever WPT Alpha8 event, and we are proud to be returning in Season II. We understand that several professional poker players and high rollers will be in and around Florida during the month of January, and WPT Alpha8 Florida offers a convenient way for these players to compete for a massive prize pool in a televised tournament with a fantastic structure from WPT Executive Tour Director Matt Savage.”
The $100,000 buy-in is a steep one; one that only affluent businesspersons and today’s top poker pros can generally afford. But the Florida casino wants to ensure that every poker enthusiast has a shot at the lucrative, super high roller. As such, the Seminole Hard Rock will be hosting several steps qualifiers to the big event.
